Orientations Mar 05
Orientations Mar 05 Orientations Asian art magazine - Volume 36 Number 2 March 2005
The diverse range of material discussed in this issue is a timely reminder how intellectual exchange, institutional collecting, and even individual acquisition can contribute to the global understanding of Asia's cultures.

As the US Cultural Property Advisory Committee convenes a meeting in February to consider China's request for imposition of import restrictions to safeguard its cultural heritage from pillage, it is vital to consider how a balance between national and international interests can be struck.

In their article, Susan Beningsen and Cary Liu demonstrate how new archaeological discoveries in China and existing material in the US can be studied together to shed light on the relationship between burial goods and the tombs they were placed in. The Japanese collections at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston are a rich source of information for Rachel Saunder's piece on falconry. Stephen Little introduces the Richard Lane Collection; Shinya Maezaki describes how Willard Clark rediscovered Fukami Sueharu's early works.

Regina Krahl considers how a long-hidden vase contributes to the understanding of Yuan ceramic decoration. While curating an exhibition on Thai art, new findings were made by Forrest McGill on works in the collection of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Two features on the National Museum of Cambodia describe how Australian and US initiatives have assisted in documentation and management of their holdings.

In the run-up to Asia Week in New York, we provide a guide to the fairs and the various gallery shows.
