The Victoria & Albert Museum was established in 1852 to make works of art available to all and to inspire British designers and manufacturers. It gained its current name in 1899 when Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of a new wing and renamed the Museum in memory of her husband, Prince Albert. |

The V&A is now the National Museum of Art and Design for Britain, housing collections of fabulous scope and diversity. The Museum holds over 3000 years worth of artefacts from many of the world’s richest cultures.
The world renowned Asian Collections include over 100,000 objects from East Asia, South and South East Asia and the Middle East. They are rich in a broad range of artistic media and illustrate many different aspects of religious, courtly and everyday life.
Several permanent galleries are devoted to the arts of Asia and in July 2006 this will include a newly refurbished gallery dedicated to the arts of the Islamic Middle East. Art from East Asia and the Islamic world can also be seen in some of the Materials and Techniques galleries, such as Glass and Textiles.
