The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo was opened in 1952 as the first national museum of art in Japan. It consists of the Museum and Crafts Gallery in Kitanomaru Koen, near the Imperial Palace, and the National Film Center in Kyobashi, which is next to Ginza. All their Activities are coordinated to provide a systematic overview of modern Japanese art within the context of modern art all over the world. |

National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo – collections and exhibitions
Permanent displays of the Museum Collection and special exhibitions take place in the Main Building. The permanent exhibition entitled "Modern Japanese Art from the Museum Collection" consists of paintings, sculptures, prints, watercolors, drawings, photographs, and other works dating roughly from the beginning of the 20th century to the present and provides an overview of the history of modern art. Although the exhibits are changed several times a year, historic masterpieces remain on show for as long as possible.
Special exhibitions of artworks brought together under a specific theme from collections in Japan and abroad are held 4 or 5 times a year.
Crafts Gallery - a look into the diverse styles in modern craft
Crafts Gallery collects and displays Japanese and foreign craft works dating from the Meiji period to the present day. The genres covered include textile, ceramics, glass, lacquer, wood, bamboo and metal work, dolls, industrial and graphic design.
Modern Japanese craft works are extremely diverse. These are elaborate works carrying on in the traditional technique, works which continue in line with tradition while also employing new creativity and methods of expression unrestricted by conventional means. The emphasis is placed on postwar works, which developed in multifarious ways.
Works from the permanent collection rotates several times a year and special exhibitions are held 2 or 3 times a year while large-scale shows take place in the Museum main building.
